A Robust Estimate of Continental‐Scale Terrestrial Carbon Sinks Using GOSAT XCO2 Retrievals

چکیده
Satellite XCO2 retrievals could improve the estimates of surface carbon fluxes, but it remains unknown on what scales these are robust. Here, we use time-dependent Bayesian synthesis top-down method and prior net ecosystem exchanges (NEEs) from 12 terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs) to infer monthly fluxes 51 land regions with constraints by GOSAT retrievals. We find that uncertainty (standard deviation TBMs) reduction rates (uncertainty rate (URR)) decrease significantly at decreasing spatial scales. On continental-scale, mean URR is about 57%, annual seasonal cycle NEE rather The evaluation shows posterior CO2 concentrations improved continental scale. Our study suggests can only promise a robust continental-scale estimate, improving accuracy an effective way achieve smaller under current coverage.

Land use effects on terrestrial carbon sources and sinks
Current and past land use practices are critical in determining the distribution and size of global terrestrial carbon (C) sources and sinks. Although fossil fuel emissions dominate the anthropogenic perturbation of the global C cycle, land use still drives the largest portion of anthropogenic emissions in a number of tropical regions of Asia. The size of the emission flux owing to land use cha...
متن کاملConsistent satellite XCO2 retrievals from SCIAMACHY and GOSAT using the BESD algorithm
Consistent and accurate long-term data sets of global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) are required for carbon cycle and climate-related research. However, global data sets based on satellite observations may suffer from inconsistencies originating from the use of products derived from different satellites as needed to cover a long enough time period. One reason for inconsiste...
متن کاملA Robust Dispersion Control Chart Based on M-estimate
Process control charts are proven techniques for improving quality. Specifying the control limits is the most important step in designing a control chart. The presence of outliers may extremely affect the estimates of parameters using classical methods. Robust estimators which are not affected by outliers or the small departures from the model assumptions are applied in this paper to specify th...
متن کاملContinental-scale comparisons of terrestrial carbon sinks estimated from satellite data and ecosystem modeling 1982–1998
A simulation model based on satellite observations of monthly vegetation cover was used to estimate monthly carbon fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems from 1982 to 1998. The NASA–CASA model was driven by vegetation properties derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and radiative transfer algorithms that were developed for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MOD...
